In the options menu you can increase game speed, took me way too long to notice I also find it to be a pretty good game for quick breaks, you can just hop in for 30 minutes and do a mission or 2 in that time period. For this price, I'd say it's worth it for the concept alone. I got it for even less, it was on -75% sale recently. I'll try it a few more times, but if I don't make it I still think that I've got my money's worth with this purchase and can 100% recommend this game. However, that mission (Legendary Heroes) is pretty unfun and you can be screwed over by map layout. In about 18 hours I've finished most of the missions, I still haven't done 1 Expert Northern quest and 2 secret Northern ones (unlocked by beating the Expert one). I feel like every mission is also a bit of a puzzle - you can do them the hard and painful way by just throwing heroes at the objective until something sticks, or you can try to "solve" it by figuring out the right build order and hero types (hint: if you start out with a specific temple, it's usually for a reason and the game is trying to help you). The upside is that each mission can be done in about 15 minutes, so even if you get overrun and lose there isn't much feeling of loss because of restarting.

Some missions you might have to restart a bit, since they get pretty hard (especially the Northern maps) and, since the map is randomly generated every time you start a mission, sometimes you just get unlucky with the placement of mission objectives/enemy lairs.

There is a free play mode, but the meat of the game are the campaign missions, each with a specific gimmick (like: increasingly hard waves of enemies, can't build temples of god X, most of your income comes from caravans and so on). You can't directly give them orders, but you can set bounties on a monster/lair or on uncovered terrain, to give them incentive to go there. Heroes then roam the map, explore, hunt, level up and so on. You order your peasants to build marketplaces, inns and other infrastructure, add guilds and hire heroes from them (there are guilds, temples and enclaves, you can have all guilds, some temples are mutually exclusive (can't have worshipers of order and chaos at once), you can only have one type of enclave (gnomes - cheap, help with building elves - your marketplaces make more money, weak-willed heroes might be tempted by untaxed gambling dens dwarves - good builders, can make ballista towers).
